Ilsa J. Bick is an American author of young adult and adult fiction. She was born on December 21, 1957, in South Haven, Michigan, and grew up in rural Wisconsin. Bick received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a master’s degree in education from the University of Washington-Seattle, and an MFA in writing from Vermont College.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Bick worked as a child and adolescent psychiatrist, as well as a film scholar and teacher. She has published numerous books, including the young adult novels “Ashes,” “Shadows,” and “Monsters,” which make up her “Ashes Trilogy,” as well as the adult novel “The Sin-Eater’s Confession.”

Bick is known for her dark, intense, and suspenseful storytelling, often featuring strong and complex female protagonists. She has been nominated for and won several awards for her writing, including the Bram Stoker Award and the Wisconsin Library Association’s Elizabeth Burr/Worzalla Award.

What I thought about the book:

I listened to the book via Audible. Before I did, I first looked at the reviews on Amazon. Most of the reviews had a negative comment about the narrator, about the book being this and that. Me, being who I am, decided no. This I have to hear. So I put the book on and listened. I have no idea why people don’t like this book. It was fantastic. It was full of suspense, awesome characters, humor and a overall very well written story. Ilsa really did her research work very well, to know what the effects are of an EMP on the human brain and body. For me this book rates a well deserved 4 stars. I already downloaded the second book ‘Shadows’ on audible. Can’t wait to start it.
